    Robotic Systems -- Principal Reliability Engineer

    Candidate will have an opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team to develop cutting-edge robotic systems. Candidate is responsible for insuring Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Testability (RAM-T) of the system. Products will include unmanned ground robots, electromechanical packaged assemblies, sensors and payloads and will require development of math models, analysis, plans, reliability test and test equipment to ensure that products meet reliability requirements prior to release to production, as well as analyzing data from fielded systems to determine vulnerabilities.   Most products will have challenging requirements such as operating in harsh environments, high performance and low power. This individual will be responsible for evaluating and assisting in selecting, and implementing creative architectures and concepts so our systems reliably meet these requirements with minimal complexity and cost.


    Key responsibilities:

    • Plan product reliability programs that effectively communicate how product reliability goals will be accomplished
    • Develop system reliability models that can be used for reliability prediction assessments   
    • Execute and manager reliability growth testing
    • Conduct reliability centered maintenance (RCM) analysis enabling logistics to establish an effective preventive maintenance program.
    • Assess how expected environmental stresses, constraints and life-cycle loads influence reliability
    • Lead development of a Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) with a multidisciplinary team
    • Manage the Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) closed loop failure mode mitigation process
    • Write reliability and maintainability R&M test plans, case reports, analysis and test reports, present technical information, and proposal assistance
    • Prepare summary reports in PPT format and present results to engineering and management
    • Develop and oversee creation of Reliability Lab for QNA UMS to facilitate accelerated lifecycle and cyclical and/or fatigue testing, and manage the lab, then manage the lab
    • Design and build test fixtures for accelerated life testing (ALT/HALT)
    • Use whatever means (simulation, statistical methods, ALT, etc…) to determine life estimates and probabilities of failure as a function of time
    • Consider all factors in determine life and failure probabilities, including tribology, mechanical fatigue, thermal stresses, radiation effects, corrosion, etc…
    • Perform fault tree, root cause, fishbone, and Weibull analyses, as well as other methods commonly employed by reliability engineers
    • Outsource work as needed to external test facilities and oversee testing
    • Harvest data from internal testing, field service, REL test lab, vendor data, and other sources to build confidence in reliability predictions
    • Participate in design reviews with cross-functional project teams

    Required Skills

    • Reliability Modeling – Experience developing complex reliability models to DOD standards or equivalent
    • Reliability Software Relex/Windchill Quality Solutions Reliability Management Software experience or similar 
    • Test Fabrication- Ability to design, construct and program reliability test fixtures
    • Record keeping – Detail and accuracy in record keeping, analysis, recording observations and data entry Communication- Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Computer – Experience with MS Office suite, product data management (PDM) (WindChill, Agile, etc.) and statistical analysis tools
    • Proficiency with formal risk analysis tools & techniques
    • Understanding of FEM and vibration/modal analysis and how to incorporate model outputs into reliability estimates
    • Ability to generate Weibull plots, or other formal statistics based failure probability diagrams
    • Drawing/CAD – Basic modeling and engineering drawing practices desirable.


    • BS degree in engineering with 10+ years of reliability engineering experience, or
    • MS degree in engineering with 8+ years of reliability engineering experience
    • Ability to conduct hypothesis testing, and generally understand appropriate statistical models as they relate to tolerance and confidence intervals
    • DOE experience and a background in statistics or mathematics highly desired
    • Familiarity with FMEA and comfortable leading cross-functional teams through the process
    • Comfortable working in a laboratory setting
    • Must be able to work independently
    • Comfortable working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
    • Occasional domestic travel (< 10%) may be required
