Responsibilities

QinetiQ North America’s Unmanned Systems Group is looking for a highly motivated Principal Investigator in the fast paced, high tech field of robotics. The Principal Investigator will design, develop and field innovative products, leading a multi-disciplinary team of cutting edge engineers. The PI will also be responsible for developing new concepts, identifying funding opportunities, securing internal funding, working with Business Development to secure external funding.  The PI will be responsible for overseeing and executing all aspects of a product lifecycle from concept generation to final product fielding to deployed system sustainment.

 

Job purpose:

Candidate will be responsible for setting technical direction and drive development in QinetiQ North America’s Waltham, MA based Unmanned Systems group.  Candidate will show thought and technical leadership in the field of military and commercial robotic products.  Projects will involve robotic systems ranging from 10 pounds to >10,000 pounds.  Candidate will be proficient in complex, intelligent systems, have an understanding of machine design and analysis, mechatronics, and software. The candidate will perform as an engineering project team lead or member on projects, and drive fielding and support of new products.  The candidate must to have a demonstrated ability to engage potential funding sources, write proposals, lead teams, interact with internal and external customers, and successfully execute complex programs.  

 

 Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  1. Develop project and program opportunities, leveraging internal and external funding.
  2. Lead interdisciplinary teams to execute complex projects, ranging from early development to product.
  3. Provide technical leadership within funding, schedule, and customer constraints.
  4. Reach out in the robotics community and build relationships and partnerships.
  5. Mentor engineering staff across QNA organization.

Required Skills

Project Management – Strong project management and leadership skills required.  Able to lead multidisciplinary teams, Create and assign tasks, supervise and mentor senior and junior level engineers, plan and manage projects including tasks an budgets

Technical – Strong skills in robotics, with an emphasis on electromechanical system, with ability to manage development in software and autonomy.  Hands on experience in assembling, testing and troubleshooting electromechanical systems in shop environment and field, strong skills across entire design cycle.  Demonstrated ability in making system-level tradeoffs under tight schedule, cost, and customer constraints. 

Leadership - Strong leadership skills:  initiative, independence, motivation.  Think creatively, promote innovation.

Computer Aided Design – Must have an understanding of configuration management in system and software design.

Communication- Must demonstrate excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills with extensive technical & proposal writing experience.  Strong presentation skill and ability to lead customer interaction required.

Computer- Experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

 

Qualifications:

  1. MS with 8-10 years industry experience in Robotics, controls and or autonomy (5 yrs with PhD).
  2. Experience with defense research and product development
  3. Candidates will be subject to a Background Investigation. US citizenship is required.
